The Poultry Podcast Show - #67 - Unpacking the importance of feed hygiene in poultry production
Dec 12, 2023In this episode, we hosted Dr. Tim Boltz, an Assistant Professor at Mississippi State University. Together, we explored the intricate world of feed mills, focusing on pathogen prevention and feed hygiene. Dr. Boltz shares his journey from a young poultry enthusiast to becoming a pivotal figure in poultry nutrition education. He offers crucial advice for students drawn to the industry: to network, work diligently, and consider gaining practical experience through an undergraduate internship. We examined the issues of feed contamination and recontamination, analyzed the significance of surrogate organisms in feed mill experiments, and delved into the challenges and achievements involved in establishing a new laboratory.
What you’ll learn:
- Significance of feed hygiene in the poultry industry
- Factors influencing contamination in feed mills
- Impact of processing methods on the presence of foodborne pathogens
- Recent modifications in feed milling legislation
- Effective practices for minimizing contamination in feed
Dr. Timothy Boltz serves as an Assistant Professor at Mississippi State University, where he combines his expertise in poultry science and feed technology. Holding a Ph.D. and an M.S. from West Virginia University, along with a B.S. from Colorado State University and an A.S. from Laramie County Community College, Dr. Boltz has a robust educational background. His research primarily focuses on exploring strategies to control pathogens during the feed manufacturing process, understanding the nutritional impact of these control methods, and examining the role of feed additives and exogenous enzymes in enhancing poultry performance.
