The Swine it Podcast Show Canada - #06 - Precision feeding applied in growing-finishing pig operations: is that possible?

the swine it canada podcast Apr 13, 2023

It’s clear as day that it's hard to build a robust swine industry without technology, especially with the challenges we face today at our barns. Among the different tools we have available, there is one that raises a lot of attention: precision feeding. That's because it seems to play a major role when it comes to feeding pigs more efficiently, minimizing feeding costs, and decreasing the carbon footprint of productions through tailored nutrition strategies. However, how far are we regarding its in our commercial barns? To discuss such an exciting topic, we talk with Dr. Aline Remus, a specialist on that subject. Dr. Remus's research interests include using mathematical modeling and artificial intelligence for improved estimates of individual amino acid requirements of pigs and for early disease detection.

What you’ll learn:

     ○ What does precision feeding mean?

     ○ Energy requirements in precision nutrition

     ○ Research with mathematical modeling

     ○ Environmental implications

Hobbies: Cycling, playing board games, camping.

Favorite Books: I am a big Harry Potter fan (both books and movies); also, my favorite book trilogies are by Ken Follet: Pillars of Earth and The Century. However, as a feminist, I would recommend all women read Dare to Lead and the Gifts of Imperfection, by Brené Brown

Favorite quote: "It is not because you cannot see [the variability] that it is not there" - Candido Pomar (about differences in initial body composition and weight of growing pigs)

Success tip: Trust your gut and be kind to yourself.
