The Swine it Podcast Show Canada - #13 - California's Prop 12: analyzing its impacts on Canada-US pork trade
Jun 16, 2023Hello there,
Recently, the US Supreme Court has upheld California's Proposition 12, which will come into effect on July 1, 2023 and will ban, within the state, the trade of pork coming from any farms, both inside and outside its borders, that confine pregnant sows to gestation crates. This resolution directly affects North American pork trades and will influence market prices until producers are able to comply with the new law. To shed some light on such implications, I have a conversation with Cam Dahl, M.Sc., an expert in meat and agriculture trades in North America, the increasing border restrictions between Canada and the US, as well as the impact of labeling requirements and pork market segmentation. Additionally, he provides insights on how to overcome these barriers in the pork sector.
