The Poultry Podcast Show - #9 - Precision poultry farming: what’s yet to come?

the poultry podcast show Oct 17, 2022

Precision poultry farming utilizes a variety of tools, technologies, and even procedures to optimize the production and the environment – including the  response of birds to it. The goal here is to achieve the highest performance, welfare, and profits possible. As a matter of fact, we’ve been seeing an increasing rate of research and technologies being developed that aim to improve poultry production – the future is closing in on us fast, so all of us should step up. In this episode, I talk to Dr. Lilong Chai about prediction models in terms of poultry emissions, air quality, and ways technology will support poultry growth and future improvement to become more sustainable.

What you’ll learn:

1. Prediction models in poultry

2. Mitigation of poultry emissions

3. Emission control technologies

4. New engineering technology applied into poultry

5. Technologies to prevent avian influenza transmission

6. The future of precision poultry farming

Meet the guest:

Dr. Lilong Chai is an Assistant Professor and Engineering Specialist at the Department of Poultry Science of the University of Georgia (UGA) and a member of the UGA Phenomics and Plant Robotics Center & Integrative Precision Agriculture team. His primary research and extension interests include animal environmental engineering and precision poultry farming. Prior to joining UGA, Dr. Chai was a Postdoc Research Associate at the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering of Iowa State University (ISU)., where he led field studies on commercial farms for two USDA-NIFA programs for improving indoor air quality of cage-free egg production facilities and for exploring practical means of preventing and controlling airborne infectious poultry diseases, such as avian influenza. His contributions include 110 scientific publications and 15 awards/honors. Dr. Chai is currently the Coordinator of Georgia Precision Poultry Farming Conference and Georgia Layer Conference, Chair of ASABE-Environment & Air Quality Committee, and President-Elect of Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural, Biological, and Food Engineers (AOCABFE).
